Part II — MOrth (RCSEd) Training Programme

Overview

A 3.5 year, post-Diploma, part-time training route aligned to the standards of the Membership in Orthodontics (RCSEd). The programme develops advanced knowledge, critical appraisal skills, and supervised case experience to prepare diplomates for higher-level practice and examination.

Structure and Learning Components

  • Clinical exposure at SJTU Ninth People’s Hospital — e.g., TMJ surgery, orthognathic surgery, cleft lip and palate, and related multidisciplinary clinics.

  • Scholarly assignments — review articles on designated topics under guidance of examiners/tutors (e.g., root resorption; growth and development; temporary anchorage devices; stability and retention; biomechanics).

  • Taught activities — lectures and seminars across orthodontics, TMD, orthognathic surgery, sleep apnoea,  aediatric dentistry, plastic surgery, aesthetic dentistry, imaging, and allied subjects.

  • Case supervision — personal tutor supervision by experienced MOrth (RCSEd) examiners.

Expectations and Assessments

  • Clinical Case Log: Over the 2.5-year period, participants treat 20 supervised cases. Three cases must be written up and submitted for formal assessment by the Examination Panel at the end of the programme.

  • Written Paper: Multiple Choice Questions (2 hours).

  • Case Presentation: Two treated or almost-completed cases.

  • Diagnostic Cases: Two diagnostic exercises.

  • Oral Examination.

    Successful candidates are awarded the Diploma in Orthodontics (Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Ninth People’s Hospital). Diploma holders may progress to the MOrth (RCSEd) Training Programme detailed in Part II.

Programme Management and Correspondence

The programmes are managed by the Hong Kong Institute of Orthodontics (HKIO) in collaboration with the Department of Orthodontics, School of Stomatology, Ninth People’s Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
