Background
An innovative and integrated approach to Orthodontic training for general dental practitioners
Orthodontic treatment is fast becoming an indispensable component of comprehensive dental service. There is a surging need for enhanced orthodontic training for dental practitioners because orthodontic curricula of universities at undergraduate level do not generally provide adequate practical knowledge in orthodontic diagnosis and treatment. The advancement in computers, the Internet and 3-D technology have significantly modified access to information and training. Typical short courses fall short of providing coherent, comprehensive, and systematic training and its clinical application in the practice of orthodontics; these short courses can be counterproductive as they often impart a false sense of security for the dental surgeons, failing to meet the expectation of patients and, most of all, safeguard the standard of treatment. In addition, the need of attending Continuing Education by the dental practitioners is not fully recognized.
An innovative and integrated approach to orthodontic training is designed for general dental practitioners in the hope of developing an interest in practising high standard orthodontics. It also provides the basis and potential for practitioners to proceed to higher training and specialization. Training programs are being developed by Hong Kong Institute of Orthodontics in association with The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, U.K. The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, with a history of over 500 years, is one of the most renowned educational and examination bodies in the medical and dental professions worldwide.
